其实这里用不定式和动名词都是正确的。我个人倾向于用不定式：and began to clamb ...
但学过新概念第二册的同学知道，这句话来自本书。亚力山大，语言大师，会有错吗？
是的，没错，本来就是一个推敲问题嘛！
只不过这篇文章，编者的语法意图是教学动名词作动词的宾语，所以这个began后就用了climing了。

other后接单复数均可，other one或other two students.
others只能作代词，意思是“其它的人（物或事等）”，常用来泛指。
the other也是既能作形容词，又能作代词。但它一般用来表示总数为二时的“另外一个”，经常与one搭配。 other也能既作形容词又可作代词，意思是“别的，另外的”。

any other 后接复数名词，表示“一些其他……”；any other后接单数名词时，表示“其他任何一个……”。

从句的时间是将来，所以是对将来的情况的虚拟。后天他们在我们动身之前赶到的可能性不是很大，几乎可以说没有！虚拟将来的条件句，其谓语动词有三式：1.过去式。2. should +V. 3. were to +V.
如果虚拟语气条件句的谓语中有should, were, had (助动词或系动词）的话，可能通过将助动词（或系动词）提到主语之前的方法，省去if.
A项=if they had arrived before ..., 是对过去情况的相反假设，不合题意，排除。
所以本题选B。
选B 是正确的。这是一个考查虚拟语气的题目，考查与将来事实相反的假设的倒装。
