句意：对这个国家的这个地区施三周的“干涸术”
要是给某个地方施了 dry spell，那地方就会河流干涸、井水枯竭。。。，该有水的地方都没水了，就这样的意思

他最近的著作都是反映“恶有恶报”的。
--- crime是“犯罪；行恶”，这里的pay是“有好处；有利”

3.The lecturer was just getting to the matter when the class period ended.
句意：那节课结束时，授课老师正说到正题上呢。
get to the matter是不固定词组，这里意思是“切入正题；谈到点子上”

4.MA,PhD是什么意思

文学硕士(Master of Arts, 英文短写为MA）
PhD=Doctor of Philosophy 博士学位

1.spell:这里是“一段时间；一阵子”的意思:

2.pay这里是“值得（麻烦）；合算”之意

3. The lecturer was just getting to the matter when the class period ended.这句话的意思是：讲课人正要开始涉及问题的实质，这时下课了（这时这节课结束了）。

was/were doing ...when...句型中when表示：正在这时/此时。
get to the matter不是固定词组。
get to这里表示：抓住(要害)
Get to the point.

Msc=Master of Science理学硕士

PhD=Doctor of Philosophy博士学位；获得博士学位者

不是固定搭配，不过是get to something。

4.MA,PhD是什么意思
这两个都跟学历有关
Ma是Master of Arts的缩写是文学硕士学位。
PhD（哲学博士）是Philosophiae Doctor或doctor of hilosophy的缩写，它是博士学位(Doctoral degrees)的一种。

spell是某个词的过去式，实在想不起来是哪个了。

pay在这里是“不值得，无意义”的意思
