1.一般情况下,用到底用过去分词还是ing,主要是分清楚是主动还是被动.但是对于这个句子,说实话,主动和被动的概念比较模糊,反正你让我分我是不太分得清楚,但是你让我选的话,我肯定用faced,为什么??感觉.无论如何,读起来,我也不会想要用facing.

2.face作朝向讲的时候,一般是和to连用,此时是不及物,而作面对的时候一般是及物的.
而face to face只是一个固定用法,想的话,两个face应该都是名词,不过没必要研究它.

另外,你的问题问得很好,其实我也对这个句子想不通,face一般的用法就是上面这两种,而face作动词和with连用的,我还真的不知道是怎么一回事,一般如果句子中有face with这种构造,face都是作名词的.
也许,正是因为这里有了个with,所以才必须要用faced. bingo!!!正解应该就是它了,在作被动的时候,be faced with sth. 主动不要加喔!!!

PS.个人感觉face是一个非常灵活的词语,平时学英语的话,态度严谨是好的,但是最好还是不要做中国教育制度的牺牲品.说白了,即使在考试的时候,你也不会有时间去想是面对还是被面对,更不要说在讲话的时候了.呵呵,扯远了,扯远了......

其实当初我也有你这样的疑问，后来做了不少题，终于把它搞清楚了，我现在帮你梳理一下，你应该能很快理解。一字一句都是自己打的哦。

其实你可以这样理解。
首先
face有正视，应付的意思，主语就当然就是人啦。
We must learn to face the crisis carefully and try to overcome them.
"我们应该学会正视危机并努力它。"

其次
face也有朝向的意思（比如这个比较中性的句子My house faces the park我的房子面对公园。）

但是我要讲的是面对不好的东西这些例子，比如
A crisis faced us.我们面临着危机。
虽然翻译说是我们面临着危机，但是你完全可以理解成是危机恶狠狠地朝向你来帮助自己理解是不是？

然后你会这样想，那我把它改成被动的不就是
We are faced by a crisis
我们面临着危机。
但是英文里这句的习惯恰恰是用介词with，不用by。其实be provided with也有类似用法的。

经过这样分析，我们可以看到，其实说我们面临着危机可以这样表达
A crisis faced us.一个危机恶狠狠地瞪着我（也就是我们面临着危机啦）
We are faced with a crisis（另类的被动）
我们面临着危机。
We must learn to face the crisis（比较强调主观能动性）
我们应该学会正视/应付危机。

说到这里，你的那个句子的难题就是小菜一碟啦
里面人做主语，可以用faced with 可以用facing（就比较强调主观能动性咯）但是就是不能用facing with
